Food production waste and the circular economy
Green Oleo is a green chemical company that uses natural, renewable, biodegradable raw materials sourced from byproducts of the food supply chain. These byproducts no longer have any useful applications in the production of foodstuffs, neither for human, nor for animal consumption. What’s more, the raw materials that we use are sourced from our local area: an exceptionally short and highly-sustainable supply chain.
The challenge we face is predominantly a cultural one. Elevating byproducts to the role of raw materials is part of the virtuous process at the heart of the circular economy: a cause that Green Oleo has been committed to for years. Our intention is to promote a culture of sustainable economy, reducing the amount of resources wasted and generating new value by manufacturing sustainable products.
PLANT-BASED
RAW MATERIALS
Waste products from vegetable oils (in particular, olive oil) are transformed into new products which then go on to be used even in the high-end cosmetics sector.
Olive oil
Safflower
Sunflower oil
Soybean oil
SUSTAINABLE palm oil
High-oleic sunflower oil
ANIMAL-BASED
RAW MATERIALS
The animal fat (tallow) used in Green Oleo’s processing falls strictly into Category III, as defined by the Ministry of Health: a byproduct with negligible or zero associated risk, in that it is a byproduct derived from edible sources that cannot be used for the food market.
SQUALENE
Green Oleo uses raw materials that contain squalene, a product with emollient and antioxidant properties that is used to produce high-end cosmetics (e.g. suncreams and lotions) and make-up (foundation, lipstick, etc.).
Green Oleo predominantly uses squalene derived from plant sources, such as olive oil, amaranth oil, argan oil and sunflower oil, and is currently fine-tuning a process capable of increasing the concentration of the compound in our products.
